Simple City Broke My Heart

by Robert Carl Swann

Simple City Broke My Heart will explore the ongoing effects of gentrification in the District of Columbia, the destruction of black culture, and the violence arising in the impoverished areas of the city due to displacement.

It'll be shot on film exclusively; black and white Ilford SFX (expired in 2002). It'll also feature a short documentary combining the themes of each shoot. This is a passion project of mine and my first time attempting to incorporate my field of study into my artistic work, and I'm so excited to share it.

Stay tuned, as the rest of SCBMH will be released biweekly, starting 2/14/23 until the end of April.

We walked through downtown northwest and took in the sites for about an hour and wondered how we ever were able to call it home in the first place?
